Summary
Product identification
BECO MEMBRAN PSplus filter cartridges are designed for the final filtration of various beverages. They are available with nominal separation rates for different applications:
- 0.2 µm
- 0.45 µm
- 0.65 µm
- 0.8 µm
Key advantages include:
- Safe separation of microorganisms, based on chosen pore width.
- Materials enable regular cleaning and sterilization for economic operation.
- Easily wettable, simplifying integrity testing.
- Preservation of organoleptic product attributes due to inert filter medium.
- Wide chemical compatibility.
Operating limits
- Maximum operating temperature: 80 °C (176 °F)
- Maximum differential pressure:
- 5.0 bar (72.5 psid) at 20 °C (68 °F)
- 2.0 bar (29 psid) at 80 °C (176 °F)
- 0.3 bar (4 psid) at 121 °C (250 °F)
- Sterilization with hot water: max. 90 °C (194 °F)
- Sterilization with steam: max. 121 °C (250 °F), 100 cycles at 110 °C (230 °F) for 30 minutes
Feed water
For hot water sterilization and flushing/regeneration, water should be softened and filtered (approx. 1 µm) to prevent lime precipitation and premature clogging.
Mechanical / hydraulic
- Diameter: 70 mm (2.75 in)
- Nominal Filter Area:
- 10"/250 mm: 0.7 m² (7.5 ft²)
- 20"/500 mm: 1.4 m² (15.1 ft²)
- 30"/750 mm: 2.1 m² (22.6 ft²)
- 40"/1,000 mm: 2.8 m² (30.1 ft²)
Filter Cartridge Design and Materials
The cartridges are constructed with:
- Filter membrane: Polyethersulfone
- Support fleeces: Polyester
- Internal and external support body: Polypropylene
- End caps/adapters: Nylon, adapter with stainless steel ring
- O-rings: Silicone (standard)
Plastic components comply with Directive 2002/72/EC and amendments. All materials meet FDA requirements per 21 CFR § 177.
Titre Reduction
Guide values for 75 cm (30") element with water at 20 °C (68 °F).
| Pore size | Test organism | Titre reduction /cm² |
|---|---|---|
| PES02 | Brevundimonas diminuta | > 10⁷ |
| PES04 | Serratia marcescens | > 10⁷ |
| PES06 | Saccharomyces cerevisiae | > 10⁷ |
| PES08 | Saccharomyces cerevisiae | > 10⁶ |
Integrity Test
For 10" filter cartridge.
| Filter cartridge types | Test pressure [bar/psig] | Max. diffusion rate per 25 cm element |
|---|---|---|
| PES02 | 2.4/35 | </= 20 ml/min |
| PES04 | 1.7/25 | </= 20 ml/min |
| PES06 | 1.0/14.5 | </= 20 ml/min |
| PES08 | 0.6/9 | </= 20 ml/min |
Sterilization
- Steam sterilization:
- With steam at 110 °C (230 °F) / 0.5 bar (7 psig).
- Duration: Minimum 20 minutes after steam emerges from all openings of the filtration system.
- Hot water sterilization:
- Using water up to 90 °C (194 °F) maximum.
- Duration: At least 30 minutes once 85 °C (185 °F) is reached from all openings of the filtration system.
- Water should be softened and filtered (approx. 1 µm) to avoid lime precipitation.
Flushing/Regeneration
Cartridges should be rinsed daily after use, in the direction of product flow, using filtered (approx. 1 µm), softened water under counterpressure. This helps remove deposited, water-soluble haze substances (e.g., polysaccharides, proteins, tannins, tartaric acid crystals). Rinsing with hot water (80 °C/176 °F) can remove stubborn residues if applied in time; the hot water may remain in the filter overnight.
Ordering Information
Example ordering code: PES 02 7 1 S corresponds to a BECO MEMBRAN PSplus filter cartridge; 0.2 µm retention rate; Code 7 adapter; 10" length; Silicone gasket.
| Filter cartridge type | Retention rate | Adapter | Nom. length | Gasket |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PES | 02 = 0.20 µm | 0 = Code 0 | 1 = 10"/25 cm | S = silicone |
| 04 = 0.45 µm | 2 = Code 2* | 2 = 20"/50 cm | ||
| 06 = 0.65 µm | 7 = Code 7 | 3 = 30"/75 cm | ||
| 08 = 0.80 µm | 4 = 40"/100 cm |
*Code 2 can be used instead of Code 5 (details for Code 5 not provided).
